The National Medicines Information Training Course (NMITC) is the UK national training programme for pharmacy practitioners working within NHS Medicines Information (MI) and Medicines Advice (MA) services.

Designed and delivered by experienced MI/MA specialists, the course equips participants with the knowledge, skills and professional networks required to provide, develop and lead high-quality MI/MA services. It is particularly suitable for pharmacy professionals who have completed, or are approaching completion of, the foundation stages of their career development and wish to strengthen their specialist practice.

Why attend the NMITC?

The NMITC is recognised across the UKMi network as the core training programme for practitioners delivering MI/MA services. It provides participants with a comprehensive understanding of the principles, standards and good practice that underpin evidence-based MI/MA services across the NHS.

The course enables participants to:

  • Develop practical MI/MA skills and knowledge.
  • Build confidence in handling complex enquiries.
  • Strengthen evidence evaluation and critical appraisal skills.
  • Understand legal, ethical, quality and risk management principles.
  • Learn from experienced MI/MA specialists and peers from across the UK.
  • Develop professional networks within the UKMi community.
  • Gain insight into current UKMi guidance and best practice.

As part of UKMi's commitment to maintaining high-quality MI/MA services nationwide, completion of, or registration for, the NMITC is increasingly recognised as an important indicator of engagement with the UKMi professional network and commitment to delivering a UKMi-standard service.

The UKMi Executive recommends that all newly appointed local MI/MA managers attend the NMITC within their first year of appointment.

Course content

The NMITC is delivered online using a blend of learning methods, including:

  • Live online presentations
  • Interactive workshops
  • Guided reading
  • Self-directed learning activities
  • Expert-led virtual learning sessions

Key topics include:

  • Literature searching
  • Critical appraisal
  • Legal and ethical dilemmas
  • Quality and risk management
  • Professional standards and good practice
  • Service development and evaluation

While many learning activities can be completed flexibly at a time that suits participants, we strongly encourage attendance at the live sessions wherever possible. These sessions provide valuable opportunities to engage directly with subject experts, discuss practical challenges, learn from real-world case studies, and share experiences with colleagues from across the UK. Participants consistently identify these interactive sessions as one of the most beneficial aspects of the programme.

Learning and support

Participants are expected to complete online preparatory learning before attending the virtual teaching sessions. Throughout the programme, learners are supported by experienced facilitators who provide opportunities for discussion, reflection and application of learning to practice.
